Will Smith franchises NEED Will Smith to survive

Both INDEPENDENCE DAY RESURGENCE and MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL had failed at the box office upon release, and the two had the same problem...they were Will Smith franchises without Will Smith. Would both of these 1990's franchises done better had Will Smith starred in them? We'll honestly never know, but it does go to show you how sequels to movies he's starred in, without him, have not stacked up. Here's hoping BAD BOYS FOR LIFE does very well.
