In 2011 I changed my name from Shane Kelly to Will Kelly. In this video, I share why I changed my name, the power that comes with your name and how our names come parcelled with a narrative that can be either empowering or disempowering. When your parents discovered you were on the way, they wanted a boy or a girl, this or that. Then you were born and they gave you a name. They had some pre-conceived ideas about who and what you would grow up to be. Sometimes, these pre-conceived ideas have little to do with how we experience ourselves for ourselves, and the narrative that surrounds our name (based upon external expectations of who we are meant to become) can come into conflict with who we experience ourselves to be on the inner. So, what is actually in a name? Words are not isolated in our minds, they join with other words and ideas to form a narrative. What narrative surrounds your name? Is it empowering, or disempowering to you? Does it fill you with strength and a sense of personal pride, or does the narrative that surrounds your name fill you with a sense of not being enough; does it come with a certain station in life you have struggled to break free from? What if we changed the narrative that surrounds our name? Can we re-write the narrative to more suit how we experience ourselves for ourselves, and become the sole authority of what that means. YES, we can!
