As we prepare each Sunday for our first-time guest, we want to be sure to create an environment that is welcoming and hassle free. Our number one goal is to get people to come back. I have had the opportunity to attend multiple churches of varying sizes as a first-time guest. At some church’s, towards the end of their service I was asked to stand to be acknowledged and taking to an area outside the sanctuary to be greeted by designated personnel. It’s important to add that this is a process even my home church had in place. Although I understand the intention behind this, they failed to give the guest a hassle-free experience. Imagine that first time guest who is unchurched, that overcame multiple obstacles just to attend that day. Already anxious being surrounded by people they don’t know they somehow make it thru the service all the while making the decision on if they will return. BUT, at the end they now must be put on display in front of multiple people and escorted to a room where they feel isolated. This can very well be a terrifying experience that can cause that person not to return. An alternative to this process would be implementing a connect card that is kept at the seats accessible to guest where they can complete at their leisure. This gives the guest the ability to choose leaving them in control. Although processes will continue to evolve we must make sure we always give our guest a choice and create ways they can enjoy our services hassle free.
