Boris Johnson tables motion for early general election after legislation blocking No Deal passes Throwing down the gauntlet after losing in the Commons, Boris said the only way through was with an election on October 15.

MPs opted 327 - 299 to bat the bill over to the Lords for more debates and votes.

Boris has demanded to go to the country rather than accept Jeremy Corbyn’s demands to go cap in hand back to Brussels in just six weeks’ time.

Mr Corbyn insisted he would only get behind one after the rebels' bill passed and gained Royal Assent with a rubber stamp from the Queen.

That means an election could still take place in October before a crunch EU summit - and if Boris won an election he could simply repeal the law.

Boris is expected to lose his demand to call an election when it comes to a vote in an hour's time.
