The mixing of dark colors in a watercolor painting gives the background a variety and contrast to the lighter and brighter sections of the art. Using a dark blue with a green, violet, another blue, and Burnt Sienna gives the variety of color and values that makes a more interesting background. Placing those dark colors against a complementary color gives the eye a better value change and color change. The color mixes are presented in this video along with sample paintings to show the results.
