Italy's Senate session on Tuesday turned into the verbal battleground of Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini as the former announced his resignation in Rome on Tuesday.

"Soliciting them [the Italians] to vote every year is irresponsible," said Conte alluding to Salvini's initiation for a snap election.

Conte also accused Salvini of not sharing information on the issue of 'Russiagate', whereby the interior minister had allegedly sought out Russian funding, an issue Salvini had promised to address before the Senate.

Salvini who had made faces and even laughed during Conte's address announced he "would do it all over again."

"I do not want an Italy enslaved by anyone," said Salvini who added his employers were Italian citizens whose opinions he was heeding.

Last week Salvini filed a motion of no-confidence against Conte in the hopes that it will lead to snap elections, following a disagreement with his coalition partners, the Five Star Movement (M5S). The Senate decided to have Conte address them first, during which he announced his resignation.

Following consultations, Italian President Sergio Mattarella will have to decide whether to go ahead with new elections or try and have a new government formed from existing parliamentary parties.
