At what age do dogs start barking? At what age do dogs start barking?

Barking is one of the ways dogs communicate and - as they do for different reasons - they have a varied collection of "woof-woof". But they don't just bark. They also grunt, moan, howl, cry, complain.

And, if we leave the sound chapter, we can enter the body language, which has as strong points their ears and tail. But when do these animals start making sounds?

Barking is for dogs

At two or three weeks of age, the puppies make their first vocalizations: grunts and moans. They will do so right after they begin to open their eyes and as a way of calling their mother, in search of food and warmth.

Around the seventh week, they begin with tiny barks. However, these times will depend on the breeds. Some, more swirls, can take up to the 16th week to manifest themselves in this way.

The dogs, already from very small, bark for diverse reasons:

- To express excitement during the game.
- To indicate that they are hungry, or that they need to go out and relieve themselves.
- Because they want to be given their favourite toy.

If you've just adopted a puppy, you should know that they learn quickly that by barking, they get your attention.

That's why it's best to start with your dog's education right from the start, with an emphasis on not rewarding barking that requires attention, as you'd be reinforcing a bad habit.

As your pet grows, you'll learn to identify its different types of barking. For example:

- When it detects a supposed threat (fear)
- To reject an intruder approaching your territory (defense)
- Summoning another dog to play (social)
- As a form of threat to a (dominant) competitor
And while barking varies by breed, smaller dogs tend to bark more.
How do dogs learn to bark?

Your puppy will use his peers as a source of inspiration. If he hears them bark, it's number because he'll do the same. If you pay attention, it's not uncommon that when a dog starts barking in the neighborhood, a chorus soon forms with all of its neighbors.

If there's an adult dog in your house, your puppy will probably use it as a source of inspiration and imitate his actions. And barking is obviously no exception to the rule.
