Thailand first climbed on the podium of the Asian Games in 2014, after beating Japan 3-0 in the bronze medal match. They were twice crowned Asian champions, in 2009 and 2013, and also have three bronze medals in the competition, including in 2015 when they beat Chinese Taipei 3-0 in the third place playoff.
The team made their FIVB World Grand Prix debut in 2002 and took part in all but the 2007 edition since then and until the competition was wrapped up in 2017. Their best ranking was fourth place, in 2012.
Last year in the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League Thailand ranked 15th amongst the 16 entrants, finishing pool play on a 2-13 record. Later in the year they were 13th amongst the 24 entrants in the World Championship.
