Hello everyone, MT here with the usual trainspotting action. At last and after years in making and testing, the Hitachi class 800 under the name ‘Azuma’ (Japanese for ‘East’) finally enters passenger service on the East Coast Mainline. I finally got the opportunity to have my first experience at being on one of these units. This was filmed on Wednesday 15th May 2019, the first official passenger service day for the future of East Coast travel. The unit began with the 11:03am departure from London King’s Cross before arriving into Leeds at around quarter past one in the afternoon. The first service from Leeds (the one I boarded on) was the 1:45pm departure back to King’s Cross, I went as far as Doncaster for simply having a cheap day return ticket. The unit used for this day was 800-113.
My personal impressions were great! Very stylish seating especially for them being eco-friendly, nice lighting, folding tables big enough to place your laptop on and power supply at every seat. The surround sound when going at speed was much quieter compare to the HST’s and Mark 4 sets, the only background sounds I only got to the hear much were the chatter from the other passengers on-board. The seat reservations were more clearly displayed with colour lighting to show the availability of any seat. They maintained the buffet car compared to what Hitachi did with the GWR 800’s. There is a lot more leg room meaning people like me can stretch their legs out more when needed to.
Everything that was filmed was from outside of the unit to a walkthrough from First class to standard class and ending up in my seating area. All areas in shot including the power sockets, toilets and bagging racks will give travellers a first look of what these units looks like in the inside. What I didn’t get a shot of was the buffet because it was a little crowded with members of staff standing around and not all of them would have wanted to be filmed.
The ‘Azuma’ units were originally meant to enter service at the end of last year. However, they introduction was pushed back due to them causing problems to the trackside signal equipment north of York. Hopefully, by the end of this year, they will begin passenger services to Edinburgh and beyond.
In conclusion, I’m impressed indeed with the new units. Spacious, colourful interior, quick acceleration and quiet surround sounds. I will truly be looking forward to riding these units more often. The one thing I will say as an improvement they should have done to make this almost the perfect train was having the first-class seats in leather rather than the same used in standard class then the journey would have been fruitless. But, nothing can be done now so we will have to deal with it. It will be sad to see the HST’s slowly fade out. So, it will be best for you all to have your last ride on them before they go. Feel free to comment below what your experience with the Azuma was but please keep them positive.
