Protesters started to gather outside La Carlota airbase in Caracas, where opposition leader Juan Guaido called for a popular and military uprising on Tuesday.

Footage shows a growing number of protesters gathering near the base, some waving Venezuelan flags. Possible gunshots were heard early-on in the gathering, after which a number of protesters were seen running.

Guaido called for an uprising which he dubbed "Operation Freedom" with support from some members of the military, and called for the official start of the operation on Tuesday morning in a Twitter video.

Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez said on Twitter that Venezuela is "confronting and deactivating a small group of military traitors who positioned themselves to promote a coup d’etat against the constitution and the peace of the Republic," and called on citizens to resist them.

Venezuela has been in a political crisis since January 23, when Guaido declared himself president in a move now recognized by over 50 countries including the United States the European Union.
