German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas travelled to the Portuguese island of Madeira on Thursday, after at least 29 German citizens were killed and dozens injured in a tourist bus crash. The top diplomat was accompanied by a team of doctors and psychologists, as the Head of the Chancellery and Federal Minister for Special Affairs Helge Braun informed.

Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Braun said that the German government is determined to "do all it can for the relatives to ascertain quickly what happened."

He also stressed that German officials were holding "intensive discussions with the Portuguese authorities" to transport the injured to Germany.

According to reports, the bus carrying German tourists veered off a hill near the town of Canico, east of the capital city of Funchal, at around 18:30 (17:30 GMT) on Wednesday. There were 55 passengers on board when the crash occurred.
